ABOUT
Rethinking Communication in Regional Media
PLATFORMISATION, LABOUR, AND DIGITAL POLITICS
PLATFORMISATION, LABOUR, AND DIGITAL POLITICS
CONCEPTUAL RATIONALE
Communication scholarship has evolved considerably over the past decade, moving from the study of media texts, audiences and journalism toward questions of digital infrastructures, platforms, algorithms and networked participation. As platform companies increasingly mediate how information is produced, distributed and consumed, communication research is being called upon to rethink its core categories; audience, publics, labour, industry and institution, in light of these infrastructural shifts. This conference places communication at the centre of these debates, examining how platformisation is reshaping media labour, public engagement, governance and regional media ecologies, with particular attention to the Global South. The shift toward platform-mediated communication has generatednew and often precarious forms of digital labour, from content creation and influencer work to algorithmically governed gig employment, even as it has opened fresh avenues for participation, activism and networked publics. At the same time, questions of language, culture and regional specificity remain central to understanding how platformisation unfolds unevenly across different media ecologies, particularly in multilingual and diverse contexts such as India. Regulatory and governance frameworks, meanwhile, continue to lag behind the pace of platform expansion, raising urgent questions of accountability, content moderation and digital rights. By bringing together scholars, practitioners, doctoral researchers and students, this conference seeks to foster critical and interdisciplinary dialogue on these transformations, connecting established traditions of communication inquiry with emerging concerns around platforms, labour, digital publics and the future of regional media in an increasingly automated and algorithmically mediated world.
